In the fifth novel of the captivating Rhymes with Love series from New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Boyle, a young woman’s hopes of a match encounter a wickedly handsome complication…Lavinia Tempest has been eagerly anticipating a spectacular Season. But one disastrous pile-up on the Almack’s dance floor derails all her plans. Add to that, the very stunning revelations about her mother’s scandalous past have become the ton’s latest on dits. Lavinia’s future has gone from shining bright to blackest night in one misstep. Alaster “Tuck” Rowland admits he’s partly to blame for Lavinia’s disastrous debut. But it’s not guilt that compels him to restore her reputation. Rather, he’s placed a wager that he can make Lavinia into of the most sought-after ladies in London. Who better than an unrepentant rake to set Society astir?

Tuck’s motives are hardly noble. But in teaching the lovely Lavinia how to win any man she wants, he suddenly finds himself tangled in the last place he ever imagined: in love.

Review:

A twist on a familiar tale.

Lavinia is a refreshingly unique character. She’d probably trip on her own thoughts if they weren’t so notable. She attempts to be a “proper” lady, but quickly learns there’s not much fun in that, and oh what fun she has hanging with Tuck. He wouldn’t know the meaning if the word proper if he’d discovered the word himself, and he’s fine with that. Despite his refusal to adhere to the ways of the ton, he’s as loyal as they come.

I enjoyed reading about Tuck’s mother and his great-uncle. Tsk, tsk to both of them, but how lively they made the story. Two unscrupulous individuals that readers will not be able to help but to love. The relationship development was a little lacking. I was not all in (not because of the characters themselves), but I didn’t “feel” their feelings being as deep as they were but the time it was actually stated (in narrative), but I did catch up and feel it later on.

I considered taking notes and making a family tree to keep up with the numerous characters. Some garnered more attention than what they were worth, and the presence of others seemed rather convenient. The discovered about the Lavinia and her twin’s birth was quite interesting, and although the subject had been brushed upon early on, for some reason I didn’t feel the great “aha” I’m guessing would’ve been expected. Nonetheless, it was a twist that caused a good turn.

I smiled at the way Lavinia told Tuck she loved him. He was utterly confused (you must read the story to find out why), and I thought it was so adorable, as was the character himself.

I expected more in terms of how the conflict ended, but I was pleased, as always, to see the villains get what they deserved.

Overall, it was a nice read!

Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 2 cups of coffee
