Blurb

The sheltered daughter of a country baron, Miss Adeline Pimm comes to London looking for adventure… and finds it in the form of a bloody, unconscious man slumped in the doorway of her family’s rented townhouse. Though his identity is a mystery, Adeline is inexplicably drawn to the handsome, injured man and vows to nurse him back to health.

Liam Cavanaugh, the scandalous Earl of Wolford, is startled when he awakens in an unfamiliar bed, wrapped in bandages that hinder his eyesight, with no memory of why he was beaten half to death. Although he can’t see the witty young woman who tends to his wounds, her alluring voice– and a single stolen kiss from her soft lips– help soothe his pain. But when he is fully healed, Liam is not ready to let go of the one woman who stirs his deepest longings.

Liam will do whatever it takes to see Adeline again, even if it means giving up his rakish ways. But his disreputable past is not so easily forgotten and his secrets are far more dangerous than he-or Adeline-ever imagined.

Review:

Liam is as naughty as they come. He knows it, the ton knows it, and it’s not long before anyone who meets him knows it. He’s the spokesman for the scandal sheets, and he doesn’t give a wit about what anyone thinks of him.

That all changes when he meets Adeline. She can match his wit with no problem, and she doesn’t hesitate to set him straight in her own charming, delightful way. Adeline has been coddled her whole life, and she wants nothing more than to prove she’s not an invalid, despite her handicap. It doesn’t slow her down, and she refuses to let anyone keep her safely snug in a cacoon.

Liam learns a lot from Adeline. He appreciates her intelligence, and no matter how hard he tries to ignore the spark he feels when she’s around, he doesn’t deny himself any pleasure. Adeline is not used to the feelings that flood her when she’s in Liam’s presence. Each having their own reasons, neither had ever planned to marry, and they are both overcome when they find themselves actually contemplating a permanent union.

Liam’s been hurt in the past. He was deceived by the woman he thought loved him, and he doesn’t trust any debutante. They’re all after nothing but title and riches, and when Adeline shows no interest in those things, he can’t help but to be drawn to her.

I enjoyed Lorret’s clever way of comparing Liam’s feelings to Adeline with his feelings for food. He’s always favored hearty, saucy breakfasts; but he now finds porridge is his preference. Adeline has an adventurous side she wants to explore, and it makes for lively entertainment. The story is filled with witty repartee, and the secondary characters and subplots are creatively intertwined without taking away from the H/H and their story.

The pace is steady, although at times there seemed to be a little too much story regarding the artifacts. By no means was I ever tempted to put the book down, I just noticed there were a couple of patches where I felt the need to physically nudge the story forward a little faster. I think it’s more of my impatience than a too-slow pace.

Nonethless there’s a lot of interesting information presented, and the character development is on point. I read The Debutante is Mine and I was tickled pink to continue with Max and Juliet’s story. Oh, I’m definitely anxious to see what’s next for those two.

Lorret’s writing is very good, and this is a welcome addition to the series.

Rating system: Cups of Coffee (the less the better)

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 1/2 cups of coffee

The moment Adeline Pimm saw the body slumped against the doorway, she knew that London

was a city full of adventure. Oh . . . and, of course, danger.

A series of indrawn breaths followed.

Father’s gasp was more of a wordless exclamation as the man beneath the narrow

portico of their rented townhouse tipped over the threshold and crumbled into his arms. Mother’s

accompanied a jolt of her limbs, an ever-preparedness to manage any given situation. While

Adeline’s stalled in her throat. Tiny grains of gooseflesh rose on her arms. Her skin tingled. And

some strange force clutched her heart.

Her own response made little sense to her. After having been shielded from . . . well . .

. everything for her entire life, a more understandable reaction might have been to faint,

perhaps. Yet instead, she felt compelled to rush across the foyer to offer aid.

Her body answered this urge. Automatically she took a step forward. Unfortunately, so

did her mother, effectively blocking her path.

Hildebrand Pimm—Bunny to all those who knew her—clapped a hand over her

daughter’s eyes. “Adeline, hasten to your room. This sight is too troubling for your eyes.”

Not just any young woman’s eyes, Adeline noted, but hers and hers alone.
