Book Review: The Hellion and The Heartbreaker by Jennifer McNare

Raised by her four brothers, Scarlett McPhearson is used to getting what she wants. Her juvenile desires of staying up late, hanging out in the stables, and wearing what she wants have been easily obtainable. However, that changes when she becomes enamoured of her eldest brother’s best friend and known rake, Alec, Duke of Worthe.

At first, Alec saw Scarlett as nothing more than a spoiled brat in need of a good spanking. However, as time does her justice, she blossoms into a beautiful young woman, whom he finds hard to resist. Caught in a war between his britches and his head, he soon gives in to the young lady’s temptations.

I actually really liked this story. When the story begins, Scarlett is twelve years old, so we get to see her grow up, which I really appreciated. Although Alec is known for his bedroom trysts, I was glad to see that he had some kind of conscience and desire to be honorable towards his best friend, despite the fact that he failed miserably. But, like I said, at least he had a conscience.

The only problem I had with this story was that the author was very descriptive when it came to their sexual encounters, however, we were given very little outside of the bedroom. Their intellectual conversations are mentioned to the readers. We never get to “hear” anything they have to say. We are simply told they also have very intellectual conversations, which makes Alec even more attracted to Scarlett. It leaves the story reading as nothing but a sex novel. No real depth.

Also, 3/4 of the way through the book Alec seems to come up missing (not literally). Even when he sees Scarlett again after a long seperation, there’s no real feeling that he’s missed her terribly. No shock to see her. I was rather disappointed in that. I feel the author should’ve let the readers in his head so we can get a real feeling of his desire for her.

All in all, the book was an okay read. Although I wish some things about it had been better, I don’t regret the time I spent reading it.

Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 2 cups of coffee
