Book Review: Motherless by Erin Healy

Motherless tells the story of siblings facing tragedy in their lives. It is a story of learning, growth, and forgiveness among the unknown and untold. It shows the importance of family and guidance, of being accepting of people we may not understand, and of being willing to open our minds to things we have shut out.

The premise was unique, and the point of view was engaging. Although written well, I found the descriptions and use of similes too excessive, which often slowed the pace. The characterization was sufficient, but the dialogue was lacking for my taste. In many instances, it was not interesting enough to hold my attention. I found myself rereading sentences in order to get back on track and keep up with what was going on. However, there were a couple of twists that I found refreshing.

I think the story does a good job teaching forgiveness, understanding, and patience. Although I would not recommend the book, I really believe my decision is based solely on my personal taste and is not a reflection of the author’s talents.

Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest, you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 4 cups of coffee
