The teacher turns into the student in this lively tale, laced with a thread of danger, and a bootload of flirtation.

Robbie, Robbie, Robbie – He has a hard enough time keeping his younger sister in line, adding a pretty lady who’s busting at the seams to let herself go – despite her relunctance to admit it – is the butter on the toast. Oh, but what scandalous thoughts invade his mind- too bad he’s not shameful enough not to let them fester. Of course getting under her skirts was not the original plan. Now that would make him less than a gentleman, and he couldn’t bare the thought of that, now could he?

Pru is just as drawn to him as he is to her, but her little (actually big) secret can ruin everything. Not just for them, but for someone else she loves. Besides, she’s his sister’s companion, and it’s her duty to teach the young woman the proper rules of society, so how did Pru end up throwing knives? You’ll just have to read it to see.

English has created some well-developed characters, it’s the relationship development that makes me say hmmm. Honestly, I do like Robbie and Pru together, but once I read the last line, I felt as if I’d missed something – like some pages were stuck together, but I was reading a kindle so that theory was shot to hell. It just seemed that the couple’s feelings got extremely intense early on – not in terms of actual time, but in development. But please, don’t let this deter you. It didn’t slow down my reading one bit.

Mary Elizabeth, Robbie’s sister – is a force of nature, and what a delight she is. She is a pure historical mess, who was paving her way to her future – prepared to kick her boots at anyone who stood in her way. I really would like to read her story.

The witty wordplay, ardent attraction, and mind-grabbing mystery was well crafted. Despite my desire to have seen a little more between the lovers prior to “confessing their undying love”, I really enjoyed this story.

Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 1 cup of coffee
