A Trio of fun!

Black combined three short stories into a double trio of pages. A lot was said in the 33 pages, and it the author did a good job telling the stories.

In the first story, unbeknownst to her, Dr. Ellen is purposefully dropped off on the wrong island and taken to the wrong rented vacation home by the owner’s meddling friend in an attempt to get the man laid. Although initially perturbed by her presence, Nick finally admits how lonely he is and asks her to stay – as a friend. However, although the story ends with her agreeing, it’s obvious by her naked exit from the tub, that they’ll end up being a lot more.

In the second story, Moonstone Magic, Caitlyn has taken a leave of absence to mourn the loss of her mother. While she’s going through her mother’s things, her boss shows up asking for help with an urgent problem at work. One thing leads to another, and well, let’s just say they end up revealing their true feelings for each other.

In the third story, Lifesaver, Alexa is saved from drowning. It turns out the man who saved her is the same man she has a business meeting with the following week because they both want the same piece of land, or at least he wants it for his brother. The end up making a very lucrative deal :).

I like Black’s writing style and her use of descriptions. She paints a clear picture, without coming across as trying to fill up space on the page. The plots were not overdone, and in case of the first story, quite original.

I know they’re all short stories, and should thus be short, but I really wish I could’ve gotten more.

If you’re a fan of short stories, you should add this collection to the list.

Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 1 cup of coffee
