The Contessa’s Brooch
P.J. MacLayne
(Harmony Duprie Mysteries, #4)
Publication date: May 12th 2019
Genres: Adult, Mystery
A firebug is stalking Oak Grove and internet researcher Harmony Duprie is on the case. It starts as a simple data analysis project for Police Chief Sorenson, but things get personal when the house she renovated is targeted.
The arsonist is in it for the glory, posting videos of his exploits on social media. So, Harmony calls for backup from her favorite computer hackers, Eli, Lando, and Scotty. Complications arise when Fiesker, a fire investigator with a chip on his shoulder, is brought in to unmask the culprit and put an end to the fires. Then there’s the mysterious emails being sent to the town’s firefighters. And who is leaving a trail of Celtic brooches behind?
Harmony finally gets a break when Jake, her ex, stumbles across information that might lead to the guilty party.
Can Eli, Lando and Scotty help Harmony track down the pyromaniac before someone gets hurt? Or, worse yet, killed?

EXCERPT:
I stripped off the flimsy plastic gloves that came with the dye and tossed them in the garbage can. Jake was still Jake, but a new and improved version with black hair. The beard might make a difference but would take a week or two to grow.
Still, I stepped back and walked around him to admire my work.
He studied himself in a hand mirror. “I hate it,” he said. “I don’t look like me. But I guess that’s the point.”
“It brings out the color of your eyes.” A little flattery might help. But that gave me another idea. Glasses. “Wait here.”
Like there was any place for him to go in my small apartment. There were several pairs of my old glasses stuck in a drawer. The prescription would screw with his vision, but if they changed his appearance, we could pick up a pair of low-level cheaters from the drugstore.
The first ones I found sported pink frames, bought on a whim, worn two or three times. While they would be a fun joke to play on Jake, I didn’t think he’d find them amusing. I dug deeper. The perfect pair with heavy black frames was in there somewhere.
When I found them, he was pretending to comb his hair while staring at himself in the mirror. The lines on his forehead made it clear he wasn’t happy. I thrust the glasses at him.
He slipped them on and grinned. “I forgot how blind you are, Angel.” He squinted in the mirror. “I can’t see a darn thing!”
My eyesight wasn’t that bad.
He slipped them down his nose so he could peer over the top. “Makes me look like a professor.”
Not the ones I had in college. He was better looking. But I wasn’t about to say that out loud and inflate Jake’s ego.

Interview with Harmony Duprie
Today I had the opportunity to chat with Harmony on the occasion of the release of the new book, The Contessa’s Brooch. It’s the fourth book in the Harmony Duprie Mysteries.
Me: Congratulations on the new book!
Harmony: It’s crazy, isn’t it? I’m amazed anyone was interested enough in my quiet life to read one book about me, let alone four!
Me: Be honest, your life isn’t all that quiet. How many people help take down gun runners or track down a murderer?
Harmony: But I didn’t try to do those things! I just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. The police deserve most of the credit. I’m happier sitting at home reading a good book and sipping on a beverage of my choice.
Me: Except when Eli is in town.
Harmony (A deep pink color rising in her cheeks): He’s my safe place. I can take chances when he’s around because I know he’ll be there for me.
Me: Do you believe in fate? After all, what are the chances of a small-town librarian and a programming genius from Florida getting together?
Harmony: Since it was his cousin Jake that got us together, fate didn’t play a role. I don’t believe in fate anyway. There’s no unseen force working in the universe, playing with our lives. It’s our own egos that allow us to believe that.
Me: Which is more important, logic or emotion?
Harmony: That’s a loaded question since I consider myself a very logical person. At least, I use to be. The last few years, I’ve been in too many situations where I have to trust instinct and I don’t like it. It makes me second-guess myself. I keep hoping for my life to settle back down. As far as emotion goes, I’m not comfortable letting my emotions show most of the time. But if I didn’t feel emotion, I wouldn’t be human and that’s not logical!
Me: What’s one thing your author does that you wish she’d stop doing?
Harmony: I wish she’d stop interrupting my moments with Eli. I think she gets a kick out of it when she creates a crisis every time we get a chance to get romantic. I’ve called her a few bad words in my private thoughts.
Me: So what’s next for you?
Harmony: I’d like to have a year or three when nothing happens. It would be nice to have some time to relax. But I keep hearing rumblings in my author’s head, and I’m afraid she’s planning trouble in my future.
Me: With that, I see our time is up. Thanks for talking with me today, and I hope we can get together again. Is there anything you’d like to add before we end this?
Harmony: I just want to say thank you to everyone who is interested in my books. It means a lot to my author when people enjoy the stories she writes. Oh, and don’t forget to read all the way to the bottom for a chance to win some of my books.
