NYPD Detective Gray Yates has major trust issues. Protecting a serenely beautiful woman hiding enough secrets to take down an entire city wasnât something he bargained for. Sheâs a loving single mother, hot as hell, and protecting her will test every ounce of his resolve.
Alex Romano is being blackmailed by the Pyramidâan elusive international organization of assassins every cop in the world is after. When Alex tries severing ties with them they refuse to let her go. The darkly dangerous detective sheâs irresistibly drawn to is her only hope of staying out of jail. He just might be her saviorâŠor her downfall.
Despite efforts to maintain his professionalism, Gray canât deny the fiery passion Alex ignites in him. In an explosive confrontation, Alexâs lies are revealed and Gray is faced with the most important decision of his life: trust the woman heâs falling in love with, or arrest her.
A whole lot of explosive action…in and out of bed!
Need I say more?
Probably not, but I will.
The only gray detective Yates recognizes is his name. Everything else is black and white. Thou shalt not lie, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not marry bad people and make a baby with them because thou may have to end up running from other bad people. Too bad he hadn’t met Alex first so he could hip her to those rules. Rules she had no idea she was even breaking. Except for maybe the first, but with good reason, of course. That reason being that baby- now an adorable little boy- that she made with the bad person who’s now trying to steal him away.
Every which a way are hulking, handsome heroes. What’s a girl to do? Turn the page, that’s what and keep on reading. Not a hard feat when a book is this good. O’Fallon hit the mark with the writing. Bullseye! I was there. Every moment of every scene. The action blew me away. I had to check for scars a couple of times. Terroism, blackmail, secrets (making it easy for the blackmail, of course), sex, lies, scandal…and best of all…love. The story has it all.
Gray stole my heart, but so did Dom, Gray’s partner and best friend. They are quite the duo, and Dom’s mysterious, yet care-free behavior made my heart thump. I am so waiting on his story. I love him and Daisy. She’s a spitfire and loyal friend. Nicky is the sweetest little boy. He tugged at my heartstrings. I felt so bad for him, and was so glad he still enjoyed his life and didn’t concentrate on his very serious illness.
And don’t get me started on the shower scene! Nothing Pyscho about it. đ
To make a long story short…read it!
Rating system: Cups of Coffee (the less the better)
0: You wonât need any coffee to stay up for this one. Itâs intriguing enough all on its own.
1: Youâll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: Youâll read as long as youâre not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; youâll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. Itâs better than nothing, I guess. Oh, donât forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesnât matter what it is. Donât waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.
My rating: 0 cups of coffee

Alex still couldnât believe the two men actually tried to kidnap her baby.
She took a breath to steady her nerves. It didnât work, far from it. All it did was make her even more aware of the man sitting a foot away. Every inhalation brought with it his wonderful aftershave. Woodsy, yet fresh and clean.
âI have to call Nickyâs school.â Anything to get her mind off thinking about last night. Despite her words to the contrary, sheâd wanted Gray to finish what theyâd started. But that was a bad idea, one she had to let go of.
Easier said than done.
Since giving birth to Nicky and having to take care of a child alone, sex wasnât something she thought of very much these days. But she was thinking a lot about it now. The truth of the matter was, she began thinking about it the day she started working for the NYPD.
The day she met Detective Gray Yates.
Alex hadnât stayed with Nickyâs father long after the physical violence started. She wasnât the kind of woman to stay in a bad situation. But after what sheâd endured, she hadnât wanted another man to make love to her. Now the only one she wanted to touch her was the last man who ever would. And the last man she should ever let touch her. There was too much between them. She may have hurt him, but heâd been fully capable of inflicting the same level of pain. And he did.
She turned to watch Grayâs handsome profile. Part of her understood his viewpoint. He was one of the most principled cops in the department. Even sheâd picked up on that trait right awayâand it was one of the things she admired about him. It didnât matter what her reasons were. The bottom line was that she had spent money received from a Pyramid assassin, and he thought sheâd been paid to sleep with him and get confidential police intel. Now she was nothing more to Gray than someone he and the NYPD would use to take down a band of ruthless criminals. What happened between them in her bedroom was nothing more than a mistake, a latent reminder of feelings they may have had for each other. Feelings she still had. Ones he didnât.
âTell the schoolââ Gray stopped, obviously realizing Alex had been staring at him for some time. âWhatâs wrong?â
Aside from the obvious?
âNothing.â She pulled her cell phone from her coat pocket. There was no sense telling him the truth. He might be sitting right next to her, but as far as anything personal went they were a thousand miles apart.
âWait.â Gray tipped his head toward the phone in her hand. âTell them youâre taking Nicky out of school for a couple of weeks, but donât tell them why. The Pyramid has resources sophisticated enough to tap into your personal bank account, so we have to assume they can break into any database. If you tell the school Nicky is sick, theyâll check all the hospitals. When they donât find him, theyâll come after him again at your apartment.â
âThen isnât the best story to tell them heâs home sick?â Alex shifted in her seat to face him. âHe wonât be there, so what does it matter if I say that?â
âNicky wonât be there, but you and I will.â Gray paused to look at her. âThe last thing I want is for them to break into your place again.â
Alex widened her eyes. âWhat do you mean, you and I will be at my apartment?â
Grayâs gaze flicked to the side-view mirror before answering. âUntil this is over, you have a roommate.â
âNo.â She crossed her arms and shook her head. âThat isnât possible. I wonât allow it.â
Because I donât trust myself to be alone with you ever again.
Gray chuckled. âYou donât have a say in the matter, babe.â
She turned to face him. âThe hell I donât. And donât you dare babe me.â Last night was sheer torture. There was no way she could live in her tiny apartment with a man she wanted more desperately than she wanted to breathe.
âToo late,â Gray said in a cold voice. âItâs done.â
She grabbed his shoulder. âI do so have a say in this. Iâll talk to Lt. Frye.â
âNegative.â
âNegative?â Alex shouted. She lowered her voice so she didnât wake Nicky, who was still sleeping comfortably in the car seat. âAnd donât speak to me like Iâm one of your cop cronies. Why does it have to be you?â
âBecause not only wonât the department pay for your protection, but I donât trust anyone else to keep you safe.â He briefly met her gaze, and there was anger there, but Alex couldnât decipher the source of it. He shouldnât care about her, and he shouldnât care about protecting her.
Ah, she thought. Heâs not protecting me, heâs protecting his cooperator.
