Book Review: Write to Me by Nona Raines

Widow Gloria Navarro never thought she’d find love again. Her husband, Emilio, was the love of her life, and no one could replace him. She hasn’t had a serious relationship in the eleven years he’s been gone, but all of that is about to change.

Bryan Dunn loathes love, and wants nothing to do with it. He saw the hateful way his parents treated each other, and they way they used him as a weapon in their constant battles, and he’s vowed to never become a lovelorn sap who allows anyone to walk all over him. If anybody’s going to do the walking, it’ll be him – straight out the door once he’s got the only thing he wants from any woman.

Gloria, however, isn’t just any woman, she’s smart, beautiful, compassionate, and just a tad bit older, but just as hot as all the younger women he’s dated. In his attempt to conquer her sweet spot, she conquers his heart.

I would’ve loved to see more relationship development prior to the revelation of love, but since this is a novella, I understand the quick pace. Readers are given enough of the characters background to understand their behavior and the motivations behind them, however, there is something lagging in the growth process. Once again, I’m contributing this to the fact that this is a novella. Despite the brevity, I still stayed connected to the characters and wanted to see them together. The climax seemed like a bit of a stretch – locating someone named Courtney – no last name given- on a college campus. I didn’t quite understand how the payback was payback, but nonetheless, I enjoyed the story. The ending was very creative.

Oh how wish it could’ve been a full novel and given me more.

Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 1 cup of coffee
