The Spare Heirs Society Cordially Invites You to Meet Ethan Moore: The Scoundrel
Lady Roselyn Grey’s debut has finally arrived, and of course, she has every flounce and flutter planned. She’ll wear the perfect gowns and marry the perfect gentleman…that is, if the formerly disinherited brother of the man she intends to marry doesn’t ruin everything first.
Ethan Moore is a prize-fighting second son and proud founding member of the Spare Heirs Society-and that’s all he ever should have been. But, in an instant, his brother’s noble title is his, the eyes of the ton are upon him, and the lady he’s loved for years would rather meet him in the boxing ring than the ballroom.
He’s faced worse. With the help of his Spare Heirs brotherhood, Ethan’s certain he can get to the bottom of his brother’s unexpected demise and win the impossible lady who has haunted his dreams for as long as he can remember…
Review:
Sexual tension is only part of what draws romance lovers into this novel. The initial contact (known to readers) was amusing. It was a cute way of showing the fun side of the leads without saying they were fun. A prime example of it being better to show than tell. This mud-slinging exchange was definitely a good way to draw interest, and what kept me – at first- was the verbal exchanges between the two. I sat back and prepared myself for some entertainment.
And then the train jumped the track….
I got irritated with the long, drawn out ‘misunderstanding’. It bothers me when a story is carried by people simply not talking – or refusing to listen- to each other. There was no good reason for Rosalyn to automatically assume Ethan had done what she thought he’d done (I try not to include spoilers), and although she struggled with her own feelings, she continued to behave in an untrusting manner. What’s worse is she was somewhat traitorous herself, but yet thought she had a right to judge him. Simply put, I no longer liked her.
However, I adored Ethan- even though he had bad taste in women. He was charming and witty, and I admired the way he chose to live his life. I enjoyed ‘meeting’ the other heirs, and Michels did a great job developing each of them. I have to say, Brice (Lord Hardaway) is definitely my favorite. What a character he is! (no pun intended). I can’t wait to read his story.
And then the train managed to power back onto the rails….
Although I lost respect for Rosalyn for a minute, once she realized the truth, she was able to get off her high horse, humble herself, admit her own faults, and apologize. Being the person I am, I forgave her. 🙂
Once the two started working together, my interest returned, and she was able to prove herself worthy of the handsome Ethan.
There were some slow spots, and as I mentioned earlier, I’m not a fan of the whole ‘I-hate-you-because-I-won’t-listen’ thing, but overall, it was a good read.
Rating system: The less the better.
0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.
My rating: 2 cups of coffee
