With a uniqueness that is sure to attract attention, Kerrigan has crafted a story that makes a clever comparison between food and relationships. Although not what I expected, I was curious at how the story would play out. Part of me felt a little sorry for the lovelorn women, but the other part of me was dissapointed in their behavior. My sympathy quickly rerouted to their husbands, and I wasn’t sure what I wanted for them in the end. Of course, the best thing was for the marriages to last, but I personally, wouldn’t want to be someone’s last resort; so my heart went out to the men.
The overall message – vows really should be kept even if not mentally and emotionally honored – is good in its own way, however, I don’t agree with marrying someone and then figuring out how to love them. I think love should be there from the start -it doesn’t have to be the oooey gooey type where you can’t stay away from each other-, but it does need to be enough love to respect the other person, to understand their worth, and to appreciate them; not to make lists of their bad habits (or habits you consider to be unacceptable), and mentally think of ways to escape them.
I think the book does teach a good lesson overall, and although the women weren’t anywhere near the top as far as my favorite characters go, the writing is good and the story is thought-provoking.
Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better
0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.
My rating: 1 cup of coffee
Enjoyed the review – it caught my eye because one of my favorite books from quite some time ago had the same title. I looked it up and it is the same book – but I read it in 2006 (Morag Prunty) I’m guessing this is a new addition. Curious why the pseudonym (not sure which name it is) My book club read it, back in the day, and made some of the recipes. I remember it being a fun read and a well-written story.
I found it to be quite an interesting, fun read myself. It’s definitely unique. I’m glad you enjoyed the review!
Thanks so much for the review – I really appreciate you taking the time to read the book and I hope you’ll give another one of mine a go sometime – as you are a great reviewer – really concise and smart and honest. All the best from Ireland. Kate. x
You’re very welcome! Thank you for the kind words, and I’d love to read and review more of your work. 🙂
