A Novella
Miriam is grieving the loss of her uncle and fiancee, who were killed by a drunk driver. After winning a trip to Canada, her best friend Roxy convinces her to take the trip with her. While vacationing, Miriam meets Brian and immediately falls for him, despite feeling guilty over connecting with someone other than her lost love, Rick. When Brian seems to know more about her than he should, Miriam becomes suspicious and wonders if she’ll ever really be able to trust the man, or does she already?
I was disturbed by the characters and their juvenile behavior, especially on the part of Roxy. She seems more like someone who should be in a young adult story, but to my understanding, this is adult romance. Even for a novella, the story is rushed, and the explanations are far too convenient and far-fetched. Although I felt bad for Miriam and her circumstances, I didn’t connect to the characters, and was not at all interested in the outcome. However, I’ve never been a big reader of novellas, so maybe my personal preferences are weighing more heavily than they should.
Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better
0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.
