The book started out good. The characters are strong, independent, and relatable. I looked forward to reading their story. Although Andria was the typical hard-as-nails reporter, I didn’t find her to be a cliche. She simply loved her job and tried to be good at it.
I liked that Alex wasn’t arrogant, as some rich and handsome people are sometimes made out to be. He was humorous and caring, but also had his problems just like everyone else in the world.
The writing was pretty good, but I still had a problem with the story.
*Spoiler Alert* – somewhat
I usually make sure I don’t spoil anything for readers, but I have to mention this. Alex has a secret about his parents. Although he didn’t start the lie, he accepted it and kept it going. When I found out why, I understood and sympathized with him. My issue is that the author decided to reconnect him to his mother, who’s supposed to be dead. I’m all for family reunions and forgiveness, but I think she failed to think about how this reunion would affect Alex’s reputation. He’s known to be a fair and honest guy, who’s earned all the loyalty and devotion he gets from his employees. However, I can’t help but to wonder how his reunion with his mother is going to make him look to the rest of the world. He lied about her being dead. He just didn’t say she died, he said she was killed in a car wreck. How can he say that was a mistake? Although the book ends before he has to face his public, the story raises the question, and I just couldn’t let it go. I just think the author should’ve given more thought to this part of the story, and maybe written it a little differently. I also would’ve liked to hear more about the story Andria was working on that wasted a lot of her time and the company’s money and resources. We kept hearing about it, but never got any closure.
Overall it was a pretty good read, but I felt it left too much in the air. I also prefer romances with at least one love scene, unless of course they’re inspirational romances, which this was not, by definition.
Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better
0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.
My rating: 2 1/2 cups of coffee.
