Marriage? To a gambler? You must be joking! Yet Lady Hermione Upperton has never backed down from a challenge. When her spendthrift father offers her at the gaming tables, she is given a difficult choice-wed the Earl of Mainwaring, an infamous gamester with no respect for her skills with the reins, or face charges for the murder of a member of the infamous Lords of Anarchy. Either way she’ll have to clear her name. Can she count on her husband’s help the way she has begun to count on his kisses?

RISKING ROMANCE

All Jasper Fawley, the Earl of Mainwaring, wanted was a night of cards. But by the end of the evening he’s walked away with a fortune-and a bride who’s suspected of murder. Jasper knows Hermione is passionate about her unorthodox membership in the Lords of Anarchy, but he’s certain she would never kill to keep it. Can he protect his headstrong wife from prosecution and a ruthless killer without endangering both their hearts in the process?

Review:

Headstrong and defiant Hermione was nothing new when it comes to ungovernable females in the historical realm of romances, but she was still a fresh smell amongst a garden of familiar flowers. Although known for her unruliness, she still elicited gasps from the elite, and those who knew her lived vicariously through her. I enjoyed reading about her antics and when she found herself in the most difficult of situations – one of the last people being seen coming out of the home of the dead man who just happened to humiliate her in front of a crowd earlier that day- I was anxious to see how she’d get herself out of that mess. Of course it was not surprising that she would be cleared, but oh, how much fun to read how it came about.

The oh so charming and you-better-believe handsome Jasper is a romance reader’s image of the perfect man. He’s dedicated, honorable, charming, and patient. All characteristics needed to deal with Hermione. Collins created empathetic characters with plausible, yet engrossing, circumstances. With full descriptions and satisfying dialogue, the story unfolds at a pleasant pace.

Although the suspense is page-turning, I wanted more out of the fact that she was a suspect. She was questioned, true enough, but so were others, and although she was seen coming from the victim’s home, the repercussions were not as thrilling as I expected them to be.

Nonetheless, this is an intriguing, romantic tale, well worth the time it took to read it. I don’t regret one second, and neither will you. Click on the pic and buy a copy.

Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 1 cup of coffee
