The premise of this story is engaging, and I sat back and prepared to read a captivating story. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as I’d hoped.

At the onset, the adjective and adverb overload slowed the pace almost to confusion. It’s always good to be able to imagine the scene- as I always hope to be able to do whenever I pick up a new novel-, but sometimes descriptions can go overboard, as it was in this case. I had to read the first chapter twice to understand what was going on because I was too busy reading about colors and textures – more so than actions.

The relationship development between Lillie and Sanchez was almost non-existent. Readers find out they share a past – they’d met four years prior while Lillie stayed with a college chum (Sanchez was her brother), however, the only thing readers learn is that they were physically attracted to each other. There was no meaningful conversation or truly memorable moments, which made the rest of the story seemed forced- especially when Sanchez declares that he never should’ve let her get away. They had never been in a relationship or shared any kind of special bond, which made it difficult for me to be okay with the statement. I mean surely he’d seen other attractive women before. Why shouldn’t he have let her get away? What great impression had she left him with?

I tried to connect to the characters, but found it rather difficult. There was some backstory, but nothing to draw me to them- to root for them. The story has a lot of potential, but the story line needs more backstory, writing needs improvement, and the book needs to be edited.

Rating system: Cups of coffee (The less the better)

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest; you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- it doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 5 cups of coffee
