Book Review: Dead Heat by Amy Elizabeth

Dead Heat tells of the connection between two couples on opposite sides of the globe.

At first not sure if she’s dead or alive, Colin finds an unconscious Kate on his boat.  He takes her in and nurses her back to health.  Anxious to find out who this mysterious woman is, he is bewildered to learn she has no idea who she is.  Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, good friends Melanie and Evan are falling for each other.  You’ll be surprised to find out how the lives of these couples are connected.

The narrative was good.  I was able to imagine the surroundings.  The author made a good use of dialogue, and gave enough background of the characters to make them relatable, but not enough to bore.  I liked the way the story bounced between the two locations without leaving the readers feeling abandoned.

There were a couple of times that the pace seemed to get rather slow to me, but it wasn’t enough to curtail my reading.  The secondary characters played their part beautifully.  The author made them interesting, without overshadowing the main characters.  I have to admit, I did wish for more of Colin.  I felt his role was a little diminished in the middle of the book.

Overall, it was a good read.

Rating system: Cups of coffee – the less the better

0: You won’t need any coffee to stay up for this one. It’s intriguing enough all on its own.
1: You’ll stay up late, but not all night. Brew one cup.
2: You’ll read as long as you’re not tired. If you are, two cups should do the trick.
3: I hope you got plenty of rest, you’ll need it, or at least 3 cups.
4: If the cable goes out, read the book. It’s better than nothing, I guess. Oh, don’t forget your brew!
5: Find anything else to do- doesn’t matter what it is. Don’t waste your coffee. Too much caffeine is bad for you.

My rating: 2 cups of coffee
